Why should we hire a birth photographer?
At my last birth I was certain my husband would be able to capture some great memories but as the labor progressed I needed his full attention. The camera was put down and not to be picked up again hours after my son was born. I wish I had had a professional photographer at all my birth documenting those special moments of my husband bending over me encouraging me with kind words, or my mother in-law rubbing my back during a contraction. While I’ve been through 4 births none were alike and certain moments and special details were lost in the fog of labour and emotion. When you hire me I’ll be there to make sure not a tender moment is missed: what did your baby look like the moment she came entered the world, what was the reaction of you and your spouse? What did the room look like?
Whether you give birth in a hospital, at a birthing center, a homebirth, or have a c-section–no matter where or how you give birth, when you have a baby, the memories of that day will be the most precious memories you will ever have. I count it an honour to create a photo documentary of the birth of your child.
How much does this cost?
Please contact me for complete pricing information.
What’s included if we hire you?
You will receive a disk with your images from the birthing day as well as a slideshow set to music.
I also offer packages including Maternity Photo sessions as well as albums. I will be happy to share this information with you during our consultation.
How long before we can see our pictures?
I will do my best to have your images available for on-line viewing within 2 weeks of your birth. You will have all final images and slideshow a month after your birth. Please allow a few weeks longer should you decide to add an album.
When will you come to the hospital?
If your water breaks, call me. Whether it’s 2am or 2pm please call or text me as soon as you know “this is it”. Even if it’s 2 am or a false alarm, I’d rather be ready to go then miss the event. I will come to the hospital, home, or birthing center when you are confirmed you are in active labour (around 5 cm dilated). I would rather be there early than late.
How long do you stay after the birth?
I will typically stay for 1-2 hours after the birth, to capture the special moments of you and your spouse or loved ones bonding with and celebrating your new bundle of joy.
Will you show any of my private areas in your gallery, blog or portfolio?
I get asked this a lot and my answer is always, NEVER! Many moms I have spoken with have different view on what is photographed during a birth-while it is impossible to not photograph private areas it will certainly not be displayed for the public. When you receive your disk you will have a special folder that contain your more intimate images to be viewed by you. This definitely a topic we will discuss during our consultation.
What do we need to do to prepare for our birth photography session?
Please confirm with your doctor or mid-wife that photography is permitted at your birthing facility ASAP. If you are planning a birth at home or in a birthing center please please check with your mid-wife AND your back up hospital in case of a transfer.
What is we have an emergency C-Section
Typically, any other person beside your spouse is not permitted into the surgical room. If I am permitted to be in the room then I will definitely be present. If I am not I will make special arrangements with your spouse. Something we will discuss during our consultation.
When should we book our birth photography session?
I would suggest you book as soon as you know you would like me to photograph your birth. Because of the nature of birth photography, there are only so many births I am able to attend in a single month.
Do you require anything to reserve our session?
Yes, I require a non-refundable $250 retainer, this retainer as well as a signed birth photography agreement will secure your session and will be applied to the total cost of the session fee. All fee is refundable should I not be able to attend for personal reasons or baby decided join you right away! Final payment is due within a month of your due date.
Do you offer newborn photography?
Not at this time. However I do refer two very talented photographers who specialize in Newborn Photography.
